Santa Ponsa Fiestas

Santa Ponsa Fiestas

Santa Ponsa is busily preparing itself for the main event of the year seeing a fun packed calendar of activities between 1st and 11th September.

This Fiesta is hugely important to the region and signifies the arrival of King James I of Aragon who sailed in on the afternoon of September 12 1229 in his successful quest to conquer the island and take it from the Moors after more than 300 years of Muslim rule.

Mallorca became part of the Kingdom of Aragon following James’s conquest, and was later annexed to the Kingdom of Spain. A cross at the entrance to the marina marks the spot where the King landed.

There are many events during the fiestas and programs for what’s on are available from the Tourist Information centre and also will be found in many supermarkets in the town.

One of my favourites is the arrival by boat of the King and the Christian fighters, all dressed in traditional costumes who then take part in a mock battle with the Moors on the beach.

Other great spectacles consist of the Night of Fire, known as the “nit de Foc” where the demons run with fire through the promenade with huge firecrackers.  Watch out for the devil with the chain saw, who will pretend to saw off your legs.  It’s loud and definitely not for the faint hearted.

There is something different every day including top dj’s, pop concerts, medieval markets and sports events and this is finished off with a magnificent firework display over the beach which takes place on 11th September.

This event really is one of the most fun times of the year and is not to be missed, so get yourself down to Santa Ponsa and join in the fun.
